For When You Can’t Commit to a Trilogy (or longer…)

If you’re a fan of fantasy books, you’re probably no stranger to something I like to call “series fatigue.” Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love to dive into an expansive world with a long list of character arcs that I come to know and love dearly. But sometimes, you just can’t commit to weeks or months of a series, but still want that fantasy feeling. That’s where standalone fantasy books really shine.

I really love standalones, and I think we need more standalone fantasy books in the genre! There’s something super satisfying about being able to binge a story from beginning to end, and it keeps me motivated to read knowing that there’s an end in sight.

These are eight standalone fantasy book recommendations you absolutely NEED to add to your TBR. There’s a mix of whimsy and magic with some more serious topics that really get you thinking (looking at my beloved, Babel).

When you just can’t stomach the thought of ANOTHER trilogy, or sometimes, let’s be real, 8+ books, these standalones will provide a whole lot of epic storytelling in just one installment.

BONUS: Lots of these are available on Kindle Unlimited, so if you have a subscription, you can read them right now.

THE EVERLASTING by Alix E. Harrow

I had to put The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow on this list (who, I’m just now realizing, has THREE books on this list) because so far, it’s been my top read of 2026.

This fantasy reads like a 90s medieval movie, with a love story between a lady knight and a scholar that makes you feel EVERYTHING. This book was absolutely beautifully written, and has a very unique and memorable story structure. If you’re a fan of multiple POVs, fairytales and time travel, you’ll fall in love with this story.

The Everlasting

Owen is a struggling scholar who becomes obsessed with the age-old story of Una Everlasting, a legendary, fierce knight loyal to her queen and kingdom of Dominion. His research takes him into the past itself, where he finds out the story he has been told of Una Everlasting is not as it seems.

The Everlasting is a sweeping love story following Una and Owen as they cross oceans of time to meet, and begin traveling together while sharing stories of their lives. After meeting his hero, the one he’s heard about in tales his whole life, he makes it his mission to rewrite history so that Una’s true story of heroism, sacrifice and love can finally be told on their terms.

BABEL by R.f. Kuang

This dark, academic fantasy set at a fictional Oxford is one of the most interesting and well-written books I’ve ever read. I found myself staring at a wall and turning on my vlog camera the second I finished this just to share with the world how much I absolutely loved this standalone fantasy by an author I had heard so much about.

Babel is less magical whimsy, and more grimdark. It’s a heavier read, but in the best way. If you love dark academia, morally complex characters, and a magical world that has something to say, you shouldn’t skip this standalone fantasy.

BABEL

The title on the cover actually reads Babel: an Arcane History, which implies it tells a story that mimics true locations and history, but in a fictional setting. A true dark academia novel, the story follows Robin Swift, a Chinese orphan brought to Oxford to study at the Royal Institute of Translation, aka, Babel. This is where the book gets really interesting. At Babel, translation isn’t just the study of language, but the act of translation is literal magic. Oh and did I mention it’s the foundation of British Imperialism. Kinda wild.

As Robin rises through the ranks at Babel, he begins to realize the true cost of the institution he’s devoted his life to, and the role he plays in a system built on exploitation and colonialism. The side characters in this book also play a pivotal role in the story and add a lot of depth, which I always appreciate.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

If you’re a mood reader who loves to feel absolutely transported through the atmosphere of a standalone fantasy, then look no further than Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus.

Reading this book is like getting lost in a dream – it’s slightly romantic, and somewhat spooky. So if you’re the type of reader who just loves to get swept up in the atmosphere and let the story absolutely whisk you away, don’t skip this one!

The Night Circus

This whimsical story revolves around a mystical, all-black and white circus that just kind of appears out of nowhere. It’s gone by morning, only to reappear again the next night. It’s absolutely captivating, and Morgenstern really does an incredible job with the world-building and setting here.

The core of the Night Circus is two young children who have been bound to the circus, to compete in a secret magic showdown the terms of which they never got to the bottom of. As the circus gets more & more elaborate, so does the connection that they start to develop with each other and their relationship to the circus itself.

STARLING HOUSE by alix E. Harrow

Here’s 2 of the 3 Alix E. Harrow novels on this list, because honestly, she just does standalone fantasy so well. I have yet to read The Ten Thousand Doors of January, but it’s definitely on my TBR.

I went in expecting Haunting of Hill House, but this book surprised me with a heartwarming sister/brother relationship that got me emotional a few times and a charming MMC that I couldn’t help but also kind of fall in love with. Again, Alix E. Harrow nails the atmosphere and setting, providing a truly engrossing fantasy story full of monsters, family secrets and romance.

STARLING HOUSE

Starling House feels a lot like it could be a Netflix original. It follows Opal, a fiercely independent girl stuck in a small town, home to a creepy mansion that seems to live and breathe itself. Everyone in town knows of Starling House, but nobody dares to venture there.

Opal meets its reclusive (but hot) heir, Arthur, and in need of a job, offers to be Starling House’s cleaner. The deeper she goes into the house and Arthur’s past, the more she starts to uncover about her own personal connection to them both.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E SCHWAB

Another TOP favorite book of all time by another masterful author, V.E. Schwab. Addie LaRue is cursed with immortality, and a complicated relationship with Lucifer himself. But to Addie, he’s her Luc.

The magical atmosphere is truly unforgettable, and it’s a classic for us who loveeee a morally grey character. The writing is gorgeous, and keeps you turning page after page wanting more of it. This is a one of a kind fantasy, in my opinion.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

In 1800s France, Addie is also cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets in this gorgeous historical fiction leaning fantasy, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue. until one day she’s not forgotten, but remembered by a man in a bookstore. I mean, come on. How’d she end up in this curse? By making a deal with the devil.

You’ll be swept away in this glitzy, glittering story that follows Addie through centuries, countries and continents. It’s heartbreaking, and while magical in every way, painstakingly human as well.

HEARTLESS by Marissa Meyer

Have you ever wondered how the evil Queen of Hearts came to her throne? In this Alice in Wonderland retelling, you follow the story of young Catherine, who just wants to open a bakery shop with her best friend. But as all origin stories go, you know that that’s not how the classic story goes.

Prequels have a very special place in media, because even though you know the “end,” a truly great prequel has you questioning what happens anyway. Heartless was just that, a masterful novel that makes you feel for the classic “villain” and takes you on a coming-of-age journey.

This one is perfect for fans of Stephanie Garber’s writing, because they both have that absolutely magical quality that’s almost sickly sweet. Extravagant balls, sparkly gowns, sickly sweet treats and a love story that will completely rip your heart out. I loved every minute of it!

Heartless is a fantastical fairytale hits an emotional note, which is a bit unexpected. It’s sweet until it’s not, and a total adventure from start to finish.

THE ONCE & FUTURE WITCHES by Alix E. harrow

Okay, one final standalone fantasy novel by the masterful Alix E. Harrow. The Once and Future Witches reads very historical fiction, but as the name suggests, it has lots of magical, witchy elements.

Beautifully written as with all of Harrow’s novel, this story hits hard with heavy themes and lots of gorgeous backdrops to the heart of the story.

The Once and Future Witches

The Once and Future Witches follows three sisters, all who have very different ideas of their current position in society and their “gifts.” In 1893, that means undercover witches where spells are simply tidying and cleaning up the home. Post-witch burning Salem is the backdrop for this story about women’s suffrage, family and self-worth.

HOUSE BY THE CERULEAN SEA by T.J. KLUNE

Alchemised is a traditionally published version of a beloved Dramoine fanfic. Now don’t let that deter you. This is a deeply unsettling yet gorgeously gothic tale of survival, trauma bonding and love.

Alchemised

Alchemised is a dark, atmospheric fantasy that follows a young woman caught between power, transformation, and the dangerous cost of always trying to save others.

Alchemy as she knows it blurs the line between science and magic, and she’s pulled deeper into a world with a man she shouldn’t love.

Full of themes of obsession, corruption, and sacrifice all wrapped in a moody, gothic tone. It’s the kind of book that feels both tenderly intimate and unsettling, with a slow-burn tension that keeps you wanting more. Perfect for readers who love gorgeous writing and definitively morally gray characters.
