How to Create Your Own Custom Kindle Lockscreen

November 15, 2024

Do you want to add a personal touch to your Kindle? You can create a custom “lockscreen” that will show your own unique style when you turn off your Kindle, as opposed to just showing your current book or a generic lockscreen. While this isn’t technically a lockscreen (it’s actually an eBook with your custom cover), it works as a creative workaround. Follow these step-by-step instructions to find out how to create your own custom kindle lockscreen – it seems complicated, but it’s easier than you think!

Step 1: Create Your Kindle Design

Start by designing your Kindle “lockscreen.” Here’s how:

  • Use any graphic design tool like Canva or Photoshop.
  • Set the dimensions to 1080 x 1440 pixels, which is the standard Kindle resolution.
  • Create! Add text, images, or patterns—whatever you’d like to see on your Kindle.

It’s suggested to use a black background and high contrast text and designs, as the Kindle’s eink screen isn’t quite as vibrant. Once your design is complete, download it as an image file (preferably in PNG or JPG format).

Step 2: Convert Your Image to an EPUB File

Next, you’ll need to transform your design into an EPUB file, which is compatible with Kindle devices.

  • Visit Convertio.co.
  • Upload the image you just created.
  • Convert it to an EPUB file.
  • Download the converted EPUB to your computer.

Step 3: Set the Cover Photo for Your EPUB

To display your custom design, the EPUB’s cover photo must be updated. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Online Converter.
  2. Upload the EPUB file you just downloaded.
  3. Upload your custom design image as the new cover photo.
  4. Download the finalized EPUB file with your design set as its cover.

Step 4: Send the EPUB to Your Kindle

You’ll now send your customized EPUB to your Kindle device. There are two ways to do this:

  1. Using the Amazon “Send to Kindle” Website:
    • Visit Amazon Send to Kindle and upload the EPUB.
  2. Using Your Kindle Email:
    • Find your device’s unique “Send to Kindle” email address.
    • Email the finalized EPUB file as an attachment to this address.

Bonus: Manage Your Amazon Account Email Settings

To use the “Send to Kindle” email feature, you need to approve the email address you’ll be sending from. Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Amazon account and go to Manage Your Content and Devices.
  2. Navigate to Settings > Approved Personal Document E-mail List.
  3. Add your email address to the list of approved senders.

Step 5: Display Your Custom Lockscreen

  • Open the EPUB file on your Kindle.
  • Turn off your device while the EPUB is open.
  • Voilà! Your Kindle now displays your custom design as the lockscreen.

Important Notes

  • This method creates an eBook with your custom design as the cover—it’s not a traditional lockscreen.
  • To view the custom design as your Kindle’s lockscreen, you’ll need to open the EPUB file before turning off your Kindle.

This simple workaround is a creative way to add a personal touch to your Kindle device. Have fun customizing!
