How to Read More: Kindle vs Physical Books

August 2, 2023

You might know the reading struggle all too well. You have a full stack of books to read, but you can’t seem to start. If you’re struggling on how to read more books, a Kindle may be the answer!

Let’s chat about five ways that using a Kindle ereader may help you read more books!

These tips are subjective and vary person to person. What may work for you, may not work for others. However, Kindle has a ton of useful features that have led to somewhat of an ebook resurgence recently.

Kindle (and ebook reading) is an instance where technology can absolutely be used for good; it offers more efficiency, options and customizations!

Let’s dive into five reasons why reading on a Kindle may help you read more books.

More accessible, almost infinite library

One major reason utilizing a Kindle may help you read more books, is simply the quick and easy access to thousands of books at your fingertips. Not only can you read ebooks through Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited and Prime reading library, you can also purchase individual books directly and rent ebooks via the library.

With this wide variety of accessible books, you can more easily grab a genre that’s inspiring you at any given moment. This is a major benefit for mood readers like me, who are more likely to read faster if I’m “in the mood” for that particular genre.

No more lugging three different books around – everything’s either on your Kindle, or available in just a few clicks.

Adjustable font size

Among the many features available on Kindle is the ability to adjust the font. This includes the font family and size!

A study by the University of Central Florida actually shows that personalized fonts speeds up reading and maintains better comprehension. When you read faster, you read more! It’s that simple.

A larger font also has the ability to reduce eye strain, especially in dim or brightly lit scenarios.

Tiktok user @apagecastingwitch shares their Kindle reading routine, allowing them to read much faster. By using a larger font, they’re able to “skim” the overall paragraph much more easily without having to read each individual word. This increases overall speed, and allows for more reading.

It’s up for debate if this technique impairs retention in anyway, but it’s a great hack! However, don’t be discouraged if this isn’t your style. Reading style is very different from everyone.

Faster page turning

This one’s a bit more technical; but bear with me.

By simply tapping the Kindle screen, you’re able to “flip” through pages much more quickly than if you were to physically turn a page.

In actuality, the difference is only fractions of seconds, but if you’re reading multiple books in a week or month, this all adds up.

I’d also argue the lightness in the hand, as opposed to a physical book, allows you to more quickly turn pages and get less distracted by setting the book down, changing positions etc. This leads us to the next reason a Kindle may help you read more books.

More portable and convenient

When you carry around a Kindle, you could potentially be carrying around thousands of books! An 8GB Kindle can store up to 6,000 books, depending on length.

You’re more likely to throw your Kindle in your bag than your 600 page hardcover, right? This means you can read more when traveling, commuting, waiting for your lunch and more!

Bring your Kindle with you, and you’re more likely to read more. Try swapping your phone scrolling with Kindle reading and you’d be shocked at how much more quickly you’re finishing books!

Reading tracking and accessibility features

Kindles have a lot of features built in that encourage reading more and meeting goals. One of my personal favorites is the ‘estimated time to finish a chapter or book’ which is motivational for me and helps me feel like I’m reading faster.

Being able to see your “percentage read” on a kindle screen go up and up is very motivating to keep going!

There are also a ton of accessibility features available on Kindle and its various reading apps that allow readers to more easily consume books.
