New Fantasy and Historical Fiction Book Releases Coming Out in 2024
The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo
This one just came out today, and we’re so excited to pick it up! This historical fiction fantasy novel follows a young woman set in Renaissance Spain, with Leigh Bardugo saying that this book is heavily inspired by her own family history.
From Goodreads –
“Determined to seize this one chance to better her fortunes, Luzia plunges into a world of seers and alchemists, holy men and hucksters, where the line between magic, science, and fraud is never certain. But as her notoriety grows, so does the danger that her Jewish blood will doom her to the Inquisition’s wrath. She will have to use every bit of her wit and will to survive—even if that means enlisting the help of Guillén Santangel, an embittered immortal familiar whose own secrets could prove deadly for them both.”
When Among Crows by Veronica Roth
Millenials will know Veronica Roth from her iconic YA dystopian series Divergent – this upcoming novella is also set in a dystopian urban fantasy world but promises some new exciting content!
“Step into a city where monsters feast on human emotions, knights split their souls to make their weapons, and witches always take more than they give.”
We can’t wait to see what interesting magic Roth has cooked up – plus the cover is absolutely stunning!
Lady Macbeth by Ava Reid
This wouldn’t be a historical fiction or dark academia list without this upcoming book from Ava Reid! Lady Macbeth has a gorgeous cover and is based on the Shakespearean classic Macbeth, but you guessed it – from Lady Macbeth’s perspective herself.
Ava Reid has solidified herself as a bestselling author with Juniper & Thorn, A Study in Drowning and more.
From Goodreads – “From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ava Reid comes a reimagining of Lady Macbeth, Shakespeare’s most famous villainess, giving her a voice, a past, and a power that transforms the story men have written for her.”
A Botanist’s Guide to Society and Secrets by Kate Khavari
The Saffron Everleigh mystery series continues with Society and Secrets! These mysteries are set in 1920s London, and follow botanist Saffron as she helps solve mysteries, fight the patriarchy and identify lots of interesting plants.
These are particularly enjoyable on audiobook, and we highly recommend trying them out – we get ours from the Libby app!
“London, 1923. Returning from Paris, botanical researcher Saffron Everleigh finds that her former love interest Alexander Ashton’s brother, Adrian, is being investigated for murder. A Russian scientist working for the English government has been poisoned, and expired in Adrian’s train compartment. Alexander asks Saffron to put in a good word for Adrian with Inspector Green. Despite her unresolved feelings for Alexander, Saffron begins to unravel mysteries surrounding the dead scientist.”

The Songbird & The Heart of Stone by Carissa Broadbent
This is our personal most highly anticipated from this list! Crowns of Nyaxia is one of the best YA fantasy series to come out recently, and has taken BookTok by storm!
Carissa Broadbent’s next installment to The Serpent and the Wings of Night (Crowns of Nyaxia series) follows Mische, a girl turned vampire against her will, as she seeks revenge for the crimes committed against her.
This series is magical, well-written, romantic and highly enjoyable! Fans of Throne of Glass, Caraval, Fourth Wing will certainly enjoy this series.
“Mische lost everything when she was forcibly Turned into a vampire—her home, her humanity, and most devastating of all, the love of the sun god to whom she had devoted her life. Now, sentenced to death for murdering the vampire prince who turned her, redemption feels impossible.
